Musnad Ahmad 31:696

'Affan narrated to us, Hammam narrated to us, Qatadah narrated to us, from Abu al-Siddiq, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, that the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: "A man killed ninety-nine souls, then he asked about the most knowledgeable person on earth, and he was directed to a man. He came to him and said: 'I have killed ninety-nine souls, so is there any repentance for me?' He said: 'You have killed ninety-nine souls, and there is no repentance for you?' He said: 'So he drew his sword and killed him, completing one hundred.' Then he remained for as long as God willed, then he asked about the most knowledgeable person on earth, and he was directed to a man. He said: 'I have killed one hundred souls, so is there any repentance for me?' He said: 'And who stands between him and repentance? Leave the wicked village you are in, to such-and-such village, and worship your Lord, the Almighty and Majestic, in it.' He said: 'So he went out, and his death overtook him. The angels of punishment and the angels of mercy disputed over him. Iblis said: 'He never disobeyed me for an hour.' The angels of mercy said: 'He went out repentant.'" Humayd claimed that Bakr narrated to him, from Abu Rafi', who said: "So God sent an angel, and they disputed before him." The hadith returned to the hadith of Qatadah, who said: "Look to which of the two villages he was closer, and assign him to it." Qatadah said: "So God brought the righteous village closer to him, and distanced the wicked village from him, and they assigned him to its people."
