Musnad Ahmad 31:704

'Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, Sufyan informed us, from his father, from Ibn Abi Nu'm, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, who said: 'Ali sent to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, while he was in Yemen, a piece of gold in its ore. He divided it between al-Aqra' ibn Habis al-Hanzali, then one of the Banu Mujashi', and 'Uyaynah ibn Badr al-Fazari, and 'Alqamah ibn 'Ulathah al-'Amiri, then one of the Banu Kilab, and Zayd al-Khayr al-Ta'i, then one of the Banu Nabhan. He said: The Quraysh and the Ansar became angry and said: "He gives to the notables of the people of Najd and leaves us." He said: "I am only reconciling their hearts." He said: Then a man approached with sunken eyes, a protruding forehead, a thick beard, prominent cheekbones, and a shaved head. He said: "O Muhammad, fear Allah." He said: "Who would obey Allah if I disobeyed Him? He trusts me with the people of the earth, yet you do not trust me?" He said: A man from the people asked the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, to kill him—I think it was Khalid ibn al-Walid—but he forbade him. When he turned away, he said: "From the offspring of this man will come a people who recite the Qur'an, but it will not pass beyond their throats. They will pass through Islam as an arrow passes through the game. They will kill the people of Islam and leave the people of idols. If I were to reach them, I would surely kill them with the killing of 'Ad."
