Hadith 31:739

Ya'qub narrated to us, my father narrated to us, from Ibn Ishaq, who said: 'Asim ibn 'Umar ibn Qatadah narrated to me, from Mahmud ibn Labid, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, who said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gave what he gave of those gifts to Quraysh and the tribes of the Arabs, and there was nothing of it for the Ansar, this clan of the Ansar felt aggrieved within themselves, until talk became widespread among them, to the point that one of them said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has met his own people." Sa'd ibn 'Ubadah entered upon him and said: "O Messenger of Allah, this clan has felt aggrieved within themselves because of what you did regarding this booty that you acquired; you distributed it among your people and gave great gifts to the tribes of the Arabs, while there was nothing for this clan of the Ansar." He said: "And where do you stand regarding that, O Sa'd?" He said: "O Messenger of Allah, I am but a man from my people, and who am I?" He said: "Then gather your people for me in this enclosure." He said: So Sa'd went out and gathered the Ansar in that enclosure. He said: Some men from the Muhajirun came, and he left them, so they entered; and others came, and he turned them away. When they had gathered, Sa'd came to him and said: "This clan of the Ansar has gathered for you." He said: So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to them, praised Allah and extolled Him as He is worthy, then said: "O assembly of Ansar, what is this talk that has reached me from you, and this grievance you have felt within yourselves? Did I not come to you while you were astray, and Allah guided you? And poor, and Allah enriched you? And enemies, and Allah brought your hearts together?" They said: "Rather, Allah and His Messenger are more gracious and more bountiful." He said: "Will you not answer me, O assembly of Ansar?" They said: "And with what shall we answer you, O Messenger of Allah? To Allah and His Messenger belong grace and bounty." He said: "By Allah, if you wished, you could have said—and you would have spoken the truth and been believed—'You came to us belied, and we believed you; forsaken, and we helped you; an outcast, and we sheltered you; and poor, and we comforted you.' Do you feel aggrieved, O assembly of Ansar, in your hearts over a trifle of this world with which I reconciled a people so that they might embrace Islam, while I entrusted you to your Islam? Are you not satisfied, O assembly of Ansar, that the people should go away with sheep and camels, while you return with the Messenger of Allah to your dwellings?" "By Him in Whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, were it not for the Hijrah, I would have been a man of the Ansar. And if the people traveled a mountain pass, and the Ansar traveled a mountain pass, I would travel the mountain pass of the Ansar. O Allah, have mercy on the Ansar, and the sons of the Ansar, and the sons of the sons of the Ansar." He said: The people wept until they soaked their beards, and they said: "We are satisfied with the Messenger of Allah as a portion and a share." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) departed, and they dispersed.
