'Affan narrated to us, Mu'tamir narrated to us, he said: I heard my father, Qatadah narrated to us, from 'Uqbah ibn 'Abd al-Ghafir, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, from the Prophet (peace be upon him), that he mentioned a man among those who passed, or he said: among those who were before you. Then he mentioned a word the meaning of which is: Allah gave him wealth and children. He said: "When death approached him, he said to his sons: 'What kind of father was I to you?' They said: 'The best of fathers.' He said: 'For he had never stored up any good with Allah'—Qatadah explained it: he had not saved any good with Allah—'and if Allah has power over me, He will punish me. So when I die, burn me, until when I have become charcoal, grind me'—or he said: crush me—'then when there is a stormy wind, scatter me in it.'" The Prophet of Allah said: "He took their pledges to that." He said: "And they did that, by my Lord. When he died, they burned him, then they ground him—or crushed him—then they scattered him on a stormy day." He said: "Then Allah said to him: 'Be!' And suddenly he was a standing man. Allah said: 'O My servant, what compelled you to do what you did?' He said: 'O Lord, fear of You,' or 'dread of You.' He said: 'So nothing prevented Him from having mercy on him,' and he said another time: 'So nothing prevented Him other than that from having mercy on him.'" He said: "So I narrated it to Abu 'Uthman, and he said: I heard this from Salman more than once, except that he added: 'Then scatter me in the sea,' or as he narrated it."
