Musnad Ahmad 7:10

Abu Sa’id, the freed slave of Banu Hashim, narrated to us, saying: Shaddad—meaning Ibn Sa’id—narrated to us, saying: Ghaylan ibn Jarir narrated to us, from Mutarrif, who said: We said to al-Zubayr: "O Abu ‘Abd Allah, what brought you here? You neglected the Caliph until he was killed, then you came seeking his blood?" Al-Zubayr said: "We used to recite during the time of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), and Abu Bakr, and ‘Umar, and ‘Uthman: 'And fear a trial which will not strike those who have wronged among you exclusively' [Al-Anfal: 25]. We did not think that we were its people until it befell us where it befell us."
