Hadith 5:221
Hashim narrated to us, Sulayman—meaning Ibn al-Mughirah—narrated to us, from Ali ibn Zayd, Abdullah ibn al-Harith ibn Nawfal al-Hashimi narrated to us, who said: My father, al-Harith, was in charge of one of the affairs of Makkah during the time of Uthman. Uthman came to Makkah, and Abdullah ibn al-Harith said: I met Uthman at the lodging place in Qudayd. The people of the water [the local inhabitants] hunted partridges, so we cooked them with water and salt, and we made them into a broth for the *tharid* (bread soaked in broth). We presented it to Uthman and his companions, but they refrained from eating. Uthman said: "Game that I did not hunt, nor did we order its hunting; a people who were not in the state of *ihram* hunted it and fed it to us, so what is the harm?" Uthman then said: "Who can speak on this?" They said: "Ali." So he sent for Ali, and he came. Abdullah ibn al-Harith said: It is as if I am looking at Ali when he arrived, brushing the leaves from his palms. Uthman said to him: "Game that we did not hunt, nor did we order its hunting; a people who were not in the state of *ihram* hunted it and fed it to us, so what is the harm?" He said: Ali became angry and said: "I adjure by Allah any man who witnessed the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, when he was brought the leg of a wild donkey, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: 'We are a people in the state of *ihram*, so feed it to those who are not in the state of *ihram*.'" He said: Twelve men from the companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, testified to that. Then Ali said: "I adjure by Allah any man who witnessed the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, when he was brought ostrich eggs, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: 'We are a people in the state of *ihram*, feed them to those who are not in the state of *ihram*.'" He said: A number of them testified, fewer than the twelve. He said: Uthman then turned his leg away from the food, entered his tent, and the people of the water ate that food.
