Hadith 5:222
Abdullah narrated to us, Hadhbah ibn Khalid narrated to me, Hammam narrated to us, Ali ibn Zayd narrated to us, from Abdullah ibn al-Harith, that his father was in charge of Uthman’s food. He said: It is as if I am looking at the partridges around the large bowls. A man came and said: "Indeed, Ali dislikes this." So he sent for Ali, while his hands were stained with *khabt* (a type of tree leaf used for tanning or food). He said: "You are very much in opposition to us." Ali said: "I adjure by Allah anyone who witnessed the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, when he was brought the haunch of a wild donkey while he was in a state of *ihram*, and he said: 'We are in a state of *ihram*, so feed it to those who are not in *ihram' (ahl al-hill)." Then men stood up and testified. Then he said: "I adjure by Allah any man who witnessed the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, when he was brought five eggs—ostrich eggs—and he said: 'We are in a state of *ihram*, so feed them to those who are not in *ihram'." Then men stood up and testified. Uthman then stood up and entered his tent, and they left the food for the people of the water.
