Musnad Ahmad 5:384

Hajjaj narrated to us, Israel narrated to us, from Abu Ishaq, from Harithah ibn Mudhrib, from Ali, who said: When we arrived in Medina, we ate of its fruits, but we found it unhealthy and were afflicted with fever. The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, was inquiring about Badr. When news reached us that the polytheists had approached, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, marched to Badr—and Badr is a well. We reached it before the polytheists, and we found two men of them there: a man from Quraysh and a freedman of Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'ayt. As for the Qurayshi, he escaped, but as for the freedman of Uqbah, we captured him. We began saying to him, "How many are the people?" He would say, "By Allah, they are many in number and severe in might." Whenever he said that, the Muslims would beat him until they brought him to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. He said to him, "How many are the people?" He said, "By Allah, they are many in number and severe in might." The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, strove to make him tell him how many they were, but he refused. Then the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, asked him, "How many camels do they slaughter?" He said, "Ten every day." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said, "The people are a thousand; every camel is for a hundred and their followers." Then, during the night, a light rain fell upon us, so we went under the trees and the shields to take shelter from the rain. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, spent the night calling upon his Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, saying, "O Allah, if You destroy this group, You will not be worshipped." He said: When dawn broke, he called out, "Prayer, O servants of Allah!" The people came from under the trees and the shields, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, led us in prayer and encouraged us to fight. Then he said, "The gathering of Quraysh is beneath this red slope of the mountain." When the people drew near to us and we lined up against them, there was a man among them on a red camel, moving among the people. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said, "O Ali, call Hamza for me"—and he was the closest of them to the polytheists—"Ask who is the owner of the red camel, and what is he saying to them?" Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said, "If there is anyone among the people who commands good, it is likely to be the owner of the red camel." Hamza came and said, "It is Utbah ibn Rabi'ah, and he is forbidding the fighting. He is saying to them: 'O my people, I see a people who are desperate; you will not reach them while there is good in you. O my people, attribute this day to my head, and say: Utbah ibn Rabi'ah has acted cowardly. You know that I am not the most cowardly among you.'" He said: Abu Jahl heard that and said, "You say this? By Allah, if anyone other than you said this, I would have bitten him. You have filled your lungs with terror." Utbah said, "Are you taunting me, you yellow-bottomed one? You will know today which of us is the coward." He said: Utbah, his brother Shaybah, and his son al-Walid stepped forward out of pride and said, "Who will duel?" A group of six young men from the Ansar went out. Utbah said, "We do not want these; rather, let those from our cousins, from the Banu Abd al-Muttalib, duel us." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said, "Stand up, O Ali; stand up, O Hamza; and stand up, O Ubaydah ibn al-Harith ibn al-Muttalib." Allah the Exalted killed Utbah and Shaybah, the sons of Rabi'ah, and al-Walid ibn Utbah, and Ubaydah was wounded. We killed seventy of them and took seventy captive. A short man from the Ansar came with al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib as a captive. Al-Abbas said, "O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, this man did not capture me. I was captured by a man with a receding hairline, one of the most handsome of people in face, on a piebald horse; I do not see him among the people." The Ansari said, "I captured him, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Be silent, for Allah the Exalted has aided you with a noble angel." Ali said: "We captured from the Banu Abd al-Muttalib: al-Abbas, Aqil, and Nawfal ibn al-Harith."
