Hadith 5:499

Waki’ narrated to us, Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Simak ibn Harb, from Hanash al-Kinani, that a group of people in Yemen dug a pit for a lion, and it fell into it. People crowded around it, and a man fell into it, then he clung to another, then the other clung to another, until there were four of them in it. They disputed over that until some of them took up weapons against others. Ali said to them: "Are you killing two hundred over four? Rather, I will judge between you with a judgment; if you are satisfied with it: for the first is a quarter of the blood money, for the second is a third of the blood money, for the third is half of the blood money, and for the fourth is the full blood money." They were not satisfied with his judgment, so they came to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. He said: "I will judge between you with a judgment." He was informed of the judgment of Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, and he approved it.
