Musnad Ahmad 5:503

'Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, Za'idah narrated to us, from Mansur, from Sa'd ibn 'Ubaydah, from Abu 'Abd al-Rahman, from 'Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: We were with a funeral in Baqi' al-Gharqad when the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, came to us and sat down. We sat around him, and he had a staff with which he was poking the ground. Then he raised his head and said: "There is no soul among you but that its place in Paradise or Hell has been written, and it has been written whether it is miserable or happy." The people said: "O Messenger of Allah, shall we not then rely upon our writing and abandon deeds? For whoever is among the people of happiness will end up in happiness, and whoever is among the people of misery will end up in misery?" The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "Rather, act, for everyone is facilitated. As for the one who is among the people of misery, he will be facilitated for the deeds of misery. And as for the one who is among the people of happiness, he will be facilitated for the deeds of happiness." Then he recited: "As for him who gives and fears Allah, and believes in the best (reward), We will facilitate for him the path to ease. But as for him who is stingy and considers himself self-sufficient, and denies the best (reward), We will facilitate for him the path to hardship." [Al-Layl: 5-10]
