Musnad Ahmad 5:569

'Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, Za'idah ibn Qudamah narrated to us, from Khalid ibn 'Alqamah, 'Abd Khayr narrated to us, who said: 'Ali sat after he had prayed the dawn prayer in the courtyard (al-Rahbah), then he said to his servant: "Bring me water for purification." The servant brought him a vessel containing water and a basin—'Abd Khayr said: "And we were sitting, looking at him." He took the vessel with his right hand and tilted it over his left hand, then he washed his palms. Then he took the vessel with his right hand and poured it over his left hand, then he washed his palms. He did that three times—'Abd Khayr said: "In all of that, he did not insert his hand into the vessel until he had washed it three times." Then he inserted his right hand into the vessel and rinsed his mouth, and inhaled water and blew it out with his left hand; he did that three times. Then he inserted his right hand into the vessel and washed his face three times. Then he washed his right hand three times up to the elbow, then he washed his left hand three times up to the elbow. Then he inserted his right hand into the vessel until the water covered it, then he lifted it with what it carried of water, then he wiped it with his left hand, then he wiped his head with both of his hands once. Then he poured with his right hand three times over his right foot, then he washed it with his left hand. Then he poured with his right hand over his left foot, then he washed it with his left hand three times. Then he inserted his right hand and scooped with his palm and drank. Then he said: "This is the purification of the Prophet of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. So whoever likes to look at the purification of the Prophet of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, then this is his purification."
