Musnad Ahmad 5:61

Abu Mu'awiyah narrated to us, Al-A'mash narrated to us, from Sa'd ibn 'Ubaydah, from Abu 'Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami, from 'Ali, who said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) sent out a military detachment and appointed a man from the Ansar over them. He said: When they went out, he became angry with them over something. He said: So he said to them, "Has the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) not commanded you to obey me?" They said, "Yes." He said: So he said, "Gather firewood." Then he called for fire and ignited it within it. Then he said, "I command you: you must enter it." He said: The people intended to enter it. He said: A young man among them said to them, "You only fled to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) from the Fire, so do not be hasty until you meet the Prophet (ﷺ). If he commands you to enter it, then enter it." He said: They returned to the Prophet (ﷺ) and informed him. He said to them, "If you had entered it, you would never have come out of it. Obedience is only in what is good."
