Abdullah narrated to us, Abu al-Rabi’ al-Zahrani narrated to me, and Ali ibn Hakim al-Awdi narrated to us, and Muhammad ibn Ja’far al-Warkani narrated to us, and Zakariya ibn Yahya Zahmuwayh narrated to us, and Abdullah ibn ‘Amir ibn Zurarah al-Hadrami narrated to us, and Dawud ibn ‘Amr al-Dabbi narrated to us, they said: Sharik narrated to us, from Simak, from Hanash, from Ali, who said: The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, sent me to Yemen as a judge. I said: "You send me to a people while I am young in age and have no knowledge of judging?" He placed his hand upon my chest and said: "May Allah make you firm and guide your tongue. When two disputing parties come to you, do not judge for the first until you hear from the other, for it is more likely that the judgment will become clear to you." He said: So I have never ceased to be a judge. This is the wording of the hadith of Dawud ibn ‘Amr al-Dabbi, and some of them have more complete wording than others.
