Abdullah narrated to us, Nasr ibn Ali and Ubaydullah ibn Umar narrated to me, they said: Abdullah ibn Dawud narrated to us, from Nu’aym ibn Hakim, from Abu Maryam, from Ali: That the wife of al-Walid ibn Uqbah came to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and said: "O Messenger of Allah, indeed al-Walid beats her" — and Nasr ibn Ali said in his narration: "She is complaining about him." He said: "Say to him: 'He has granted me protection.'" Ali said: She did not wait but a little while until she returned and said: "He did not increase me in anything but beating." So he took a fringe from his garment and gave it to her, and said: "Say to him: 'Indeed, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, has granted me protection.'" She did not wait but a little while until she returned and said: "He did not increase me in anything but beating." So he raised his hands and said: "O Allah, upon You is al-Walid; he has sinned against me twice." This is the wording of the hadith of al-Qawariri, and their meaning is one.
