Musnad Ahmad 5:742

Bahz and 'Affan—the meaning being the same—narrated to us, they said: Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, Simak informed us, from Hanash ibn al-Mu'tamir, that 'Ali was in Yemen, and they dug a pit for a lion. A man came and fell into it, and he clung to another, and the other clung to another, and the other clung to another, until they became four. The lion wounded them inside it; some of them died in it, and some were brought out and then died. He said: They disputed over that until they took up arms. He said: 'Ali came to them and said: "Woe to you! You are killing two hundred people over the affair of four people? Come, let me judge between you with a judgment. If you are satisfied with it, then [so be it], otherwise go up to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace." He said: "So he judged for the first one a quarter of his blood money, for the second a third of his blood money, for the third half of his blood money, and for the fourth the full blood money." He said: Some of them were satisfied, and some disliked it, and he placed the blood money upon the tribes of those who had crowded. He said: So they went up to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace—Bahz said: Hammad said: I think he said: He was reclining, then he sat up—he said: "I will judge between you with a judgment." He said: Then he was informed that 'Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, had judged such and such. He said: So he upheld his judgment. 'Affan said: "I will judge between you."
