Abdullah narrated to us, Abbas ibn al-Walid al-Narsi narrated to me, Abd al-Wahid ibn Ziyad narrated to us, Sa’id al-Jurayri narrated to us, from Abu al-Ward, from Ibn A’bad, who said: Ali ibn Abi Talib said to me: "O son of A’bad, do you know what the right of food is?" I said: "And what is its right, O son of Abu Talib?" He said: "You say: 'In the name of Allah, O Allah, bless for us that which You have provided for us.'" He said: "And do you know what its gratitude is when you have finished?" I said: "And what is its gratitude?" He said: "You say: 'Praise be to Allah who fed us and gave us drink.'" Then he said: "Shall I not tell you about myself and Fatimah? She was the daughter of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and she was the dearest of his family to him, and she was my wife. She ground with the hand mill until the hand mill left a mark on her hand, and she carried water with the waterskin until the waterskin left a mark on her chest, and she swept the house until her clothes became dusty, and she kindled fire under the pot until her clothes became soiled, and she suffered harm from that. Then some captives—or servants—were brought to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. I said to her: 'Go to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and ask him for a servant to protect you from the heat of what you are in.' She went to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and found servants with him, so she returned and did not ask him. Then he mentioned the hadith, and he said: 'Shall I not guide you to that which is better for you than a servant? When you go to your bed, glorify Allah thirty-three times, praise Him thirty-three times, and magnify Him thirty-four times.'" He said: "She put her head out and said: 'I am pleased with Allah and His Messenger,' twice." He mentioned the like of the hadith of Ibn ‘Ulayyah, from al-Jurayri, or similar to it.
