Musnad Ahmad 5:85

Muhammad ibn Ubayd narrated to us, Hashim ibn al-Barid narrated to us, from Husayn ibn Maymun, from Abdullah ibn Abdullah, the judge of Rayy, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla, who said: I heard the Commander of the Faithful, Ali, say: I, Fatimah, al-Abbas, and Zayd ibn Harithah gathered before the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. Al-Abbas said: "O Messenger of Allah, my age has advanced, my bones have become brittle, and my expenses have increased. If you see fit, O Messenger of Allah, to order for me such and such amount of food, then do so." The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "We shall do so." Fatimah said: "O Messenger of Allah, if you see fit to order for me as you ordered for your uncle, then do so." The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "We shall do that." Then Zayd ibn Harithah said: "O Messenger of Allah, you had given me land from which I made my living, then you took it back. If you see fit to return it to me, then do so." The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "We shall do that." He said: Then I said: "O Messenger of Allah, if you see fit to put me in charge of this right which Allah has placed for us in His Book from this *khums* (one-fifth), so that I may distribute it during your lifetime, lest anyone dispute it with me after you." The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "We shall do that." So the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, put me in charge of it, and I distributed it during his lifetime. Then Abu Bakr put me in charge of it, and I distributed it during his lifetime. Then Umar put me in charge of it, and I distributed it during his lifetime, until it was the last year of Umar’s years, when a great deal of wealth came to him.
