Musnad Ahmad 5:96

Mu'awiyah narrated to us, Abu Ishaq narrated to us, from Shu'bah, from al-Hakam, from Abu Muhammad al-Hudhali, from Ali, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was at a funeral and said: "Which of you will set out to Medina and not leave an idol in it without breaking it, nor a grave without leveling it, nor an image without defacing it?" A man said: "I will, O Messenger of Allah." So he set out, but he feared the people of Medina, so he returned. Ali said: "I will set out, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "Then set out." So he set out, then he returned and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I did not leave an idol in it without breaking it, nor a grave without leveling it, nor an image without defacing it." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Whoever returns to the making of any of this has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)." Then he said: "Do not be a tempter, nor arrogant, nor a merchant except for the merchant of good, for those are the ones who are preceded by deeds."
