Bahz ibn Asad Abu al-Aswad al-Ammi narrated to us, Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, Ishaq ibn Abdullah ibn Abi Talhah informed us, from Anas ibn Malik, that Hawazin came on the day of Hunayn with children, women, camels, and livestock, and they arranged them in rows to outnumber the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. When they met, the Muslims turned away retreating, as Allah the Almighty and Majestic said. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "O servants of Allah, I am the servant of Allah and His Messenger. O company of the Ansar, I am the servant of Allah and His Messenger." Then Allah defeated the polytheists—Affan said: "And they did not strike with a sword, nor did they pierce with a spear." The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said on that day: "Whoever kills a disbeliever, he shall have his spoils." Abu Talhah killed twenty men that day and took their spoils. He said: Abu Qatadah said: "O Messenger of Allah, I struck a man on the shoulder blade, and he was wearing armor, so I was distracted from him. See who took it." A man stood up and said: "I took it, so satisfy him with it and give it to me." He said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, would not be asked for anything except that he would give it or remain silent. So the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, remained silent. Umar said: "No, by Allah, Allah will not take it as booty from one of His lions and give it to you." The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, laughed and said: "Umar has spoken the truth." He said: Umm Sulaym had a dagger with her. Abu Talhah said: "What is this with you?" She said: "I took it so that if any of the polytheists approach me, I will rip open his belly with it." Abu Talhah said: "O Messenger of Allah, do you not hear what Umm Sulaym is saying?" She said: "O Messenger of Allah, kill those of the Tulaqa (those freed at the conquest of Mecca) who are behind us, for they fled from you." He said: "Allah has sufficed us, and you have done well, O Umm Sulaym."
