Musnad Ahmad 32:1039

Bahz narrated to us, Hammad narrated to us, Hisham ibn Zayd narrated to me, he said: I entered the governor's residence with my grandfather, and there was a hen that had been tied up and was being shot at. Every time an arrow hit it, it would cry out. He said: "The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, forbade that animals be tied up [for target practice]."
