Musnad Ahmad 32:1503

'Abd al-Wahhab narrated to us, Sa'id ibn Abi 'Aruba narrated to us, from Qatadah, from Anas ibn Malik, that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) entered a palm grove belonging to Banu al-Najjar. He heard a sound and was startled, so he said: "Who are the occupants of these graves?" They said: "O Prophet of Allah, people who died during the Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic era)." He said: "Seek refuge in Allah from the punishment of the grave, the punishment of the Fire, and the trial of the Dajjal." They said: "What is that, O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "Indeed, this Ummah is tested in its graves. When the believer is placed in his grave, an angel comes to him and asks him: 'What did you use to worship?' If Allah guides him, he says: 'I used to worship Allah.' Then it is said to him: 'What did you use to say about this man?' He says: 'He is the servant of Allah and His Messenger.' He is not asked about anything else. Then he is taken to a house that was for him in the Fire, and it is said to him: 'This was your house in the Fire, but Allah protected you and had mercy on you, so He replaced it for you with a house in Paradise.' He says: 'Let me go so that I may go and give glad tidings to my family.' It is said to him: 'Stay.'" "And when the disbeliever is placed in his grave, an angel comes to him and says to him: 'What did you use to say about this man?' He says: 'I used to say what the people said.' Then he strikes him with an iron hammer between his ears, and he lets out a cry that is heard by all creation except the two heavy ones (mankind and jinn)."
