Musnad Anas bin Malik (RA)

Hadith 32:159

Abdullah ibn Idris narrated to us, he said: I heard al-Mukhtar ibn Fulful say: I asked Anas ibn Malik about drinking from vessels, and he said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, forbade the *muzaffatah* (pitch-coated vessels), and he said: "Every intoxicant is haram." He said: I said: And what is the *muzaffatah*? He said: "The *muqayyarah* (tar-coated vessel)." He said: I said: Then lead vessels and glass bottles? He said: "There is no harm in them." He said: I said: Indeed, some people dislike them. He said: "Leave what makes you doubt for what does not make you doubt, for every intoxicant is haram." He said: I said to him: You have spoken the truth, intoxication is haram, but what about a drink or two with our food? He said: "Whatever its large amount intoxicates, its small amount is haram." And he said: "Wine (*al-khamr*) is from grapes, dates, honey, wheat, barley, and maize. So whatever is fermented from that, it is wine."
