Musnad Anas bin Malik (RA)

Hadith 32:1618

'Affan narrated to us, Hammam narrated to us, Qatadah narrated to us, from Anas bin Malik, that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "The believers will be gathered on the Day of Resurrection and will be anxious about that. They will say: 'If only we sought intercession with our Lord so that He might relieve us from our place.' So they will come to Adam and say: 'You are our father, Allah created you with His hand, made His angels prostrate to you, and taught you the names of everything. So intercede for us with your Lord.'" He said: "He will say: 'I am not for that,' and he will mention his sin which he committed, his eating from the tree when he had been forbidden from it. 'But go to Nuh, the first prophet whom Allah sent to the people of the earth.' He said: 'So they will come to Nuh, and he will say: 'I am not for that,' and he will mention his sin, his asking Allah without knowledge. 'But go to Ibrahim, the Khalil (friend) of the Most Merciful.' So they will come to Ibrahim, and he will say: 'I am not for that,' and he will mention his sin which he committed, the three lies he told: his saying 'I am sick,' his saying 'Rather, this great one of them did it,' and his coming to a tyrannical, luxurious ruler while he was with his wife, and he said: 'Tell him that you are my sister, for I will tell him that you are my sister.' 'But go to Musa, a servant whom Allah spoke to directly and gave the Torah.'" He said: "So they will come to Musa, and he will say: 'I am not for that,' and he will mention his sin which he committed, his killing of the man. 'But go to 'Isa, the servant of Allah, His messenger, His word, and His spirit.' So they will come to 'Isa, and he will say: 'I am not for that, but go to Muhammad, the servant of Allah and His messenger, whose past and future sins have been forgiven.'" He said: "So they will come to me, and I will seek permission from my Lord in His abode, and I will be granted permission to enter upon Him. When I see Him, I will fall prostrate, and He will leave me for as long as Allah wills to leave me. Then He will say: 'Raise your head, Muhammad, speak and you will be heard, intercede and your intercession will be accepted, and ask and you will be given.' So I will raise my head and praise my Lord with a praise and glorification that He will teach me. Then I will intercede, and He will set a limit for me, so I will go out and bring them into Paradise." Hammam said: "And I heard him say: 'So I will bring them out of the Fire and bring them into Paradise. Then I will seek permission from my Lord a second time, and I will be granted permission to enter upon Him. When I see Him, I will fall prostrate, and He will leave me for as long as Allah wills to leave me. Then He will say: 'Raise your head, Muhammad, speak and you will be heard, intercede and your intercession will be accepted, and ask and you will be given.'" He said: "So I will raise my head and praise my Lord with a praise and glorification that He will teach me. Then I will intercede, and He will set a limit for me, so I will go out and bring them into Paradise." Hammam said: "And I also heard him say: 'So I will bring them out of the Fire and bring them into Paradise.' He said: 'Then I will seek permission from my Lord a third time, and when I see Him, I will fall prostrate, and He will leave me for as long as Allah wills to leave me. Then He will say: 'Raise your head, Muhammad, speak and you will be heard, intercede and your intercession will be accepted, and ask and you will be given.' So I will raise my head and praise my Lord with a praise and glorification that He will teach me. Then I will intercede, and He will set a limit for me, so I will go out and bring them into Paradise.'" Hammam said: "And I heard him say: 'So I will bring them out of the Fire and bring them into Paradise.' Then there will remain in the Fire only those whom the Quran has confined"—meaning those for whom eternity is mandatory. Then Qatadah recited: "It may be that your Lord will raise you to a praised station" [Al-Isra: 79]. He said: "It is the Praised Station which Allah promised His Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)."
