Musnad Ahmad 32:1714

'Affan narrated to us, Hammad narrated to us, he said: Thabit informed us, from Anas, "That Anas ibn al-Nadr was absent from the battle of Badr. He said: 'I was absent from the first battle the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, witnessed. If I see a battle, Allah will surely see what I do.' When the day of Uhud came, the companions of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, were defeated. Anas approached and saw Sa'd ibn Mu'adh retreating. He said: 'O Abu 'Amr, where? Where? Stand! For by the One in Whose hand is my soul, I truly find the scent of Paradise before Uhud.' He charged until he was killed. Sa'd ibn Mu'adh said: 'By the One in Whose hand is my soul, I could not do what he did.' His sister said: 'I did not recognize my brother except by his fingertips.' There were more than eighty wounds on him, between a strike of a sword, a shot of an arrow, and a thrust of a spear. Then Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, revealed concerning him: 'Among the believers are men true to what they promised Allah' [Al-Ahzab: 23], up to His saying: 'and they did not alter [the terms of their commitment] by any alteration' [Al-Ahzab: 23]."
