Hadith 32:1759

'Affan narrated to us, Hammad narrated to us, from Thabit, from Anas ibn Malik, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) consulted [the people] when news reached him of Abu Sufyan’s approach. He said: So Abu Bakr spoke, and he turned away from him. Then Umar spoke, and he turned away from him. Then Sa’d ibn ‘Ubadah said: "Is it us that the Messenger of Allah wants? By the One in Whose hand is my soul, if you were to order us to drive them into the sea, we would drive them into it, and if you were to order us to strike their camels' flanks to Bark al-Ghimad, we would do it." 'Affan said: Sulayman said, from Ibn ‘Awn, from ‘Amr ibn Sa’id: "Al-Ghimad." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) called upon the people, and they set out until they encamped at Badr. The water-carriers of Quraysh came to them, and among them was a black boy belonging to the Banu al-Hajjaj. They captured him, and the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would ask him about Abu Sufyan and his companions. He would say: "I have no knowledge of Abu Sufyan, but here are Abu Jahl ibn Hisham, ‘Utbah ibn Rabi’ah, Shaybah, and Umayyah ibn Khalaf." When he said that, they would beat him. When they beat him, he would say: "Yes, I will tell you, this is Abu Sufyan." When they would leave him and ask him, he would say: "I have no knowledge of Abu Sufyan, but here are Abu Jahl, ‘Utbah, Shaybah, and Umayyah among the people." He said: When he said this also, they would beat him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was standing praying. When he saw that, he finished and said: "By the One in Whose hand is my soul, you beat him when he tells you the truth, and you leave him when he lies to you." He said: And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "This is the place of death of so-and-so tomorrow," placing his hand on the ground here and here. And not one of them moved away from the spot where the hand of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had been.
