Musnad Ahmad 32:414

'Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us, Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Thabit, from Anas, that when a woman among the Jews would menstruate, they would not eat with them, nor would they cohabit with them in the houses. The companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, asked [about this], so Allah the Almighty revealed: "They ask you about menstruation. Say, 'It is harm, so keep away from women during menstruation and do not approach them until they are pure,'" until He finished the verse. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "Do everything except sexual intercourse." This reached the Jews, and they said: "What does this man want? He does not leave any of our affairs without opposing us in it." Usayd ibn Hudayr and 'Abbad ibn Bishr came and said: "O Messenger of Allah, the Jews said such and such. Shall we not cohabit with them?" The face of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, changed, until we thought he was angry with them. They went out, and a gift of milk for the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, met them. He sent [someone] after them and gave them to drink, so they knew that he was not angry with them. 'Abdullah narrated to us, he said: I heard my father say: "Hammad ibn Salamah would not praise or commend any of his hadith, except this hadith, due to its excellence."
