Musnad Ahmad 32:454

Hashim ibn al-Qasim narrated to us, Layth narrated to us, from Khalid ibn Yazid, from Sa'id ibn Abi Hilal, from Anas ibn Malik, that he said: A man from Banu Tamim came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I am a man of much wealth, and I have family, children, and a settled residence. So inform me, how should I spend? And what should I do?" The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "You bring out the Zakat from your wealth, for it is a purification that purifies you; and you maintain ties with your relatives, and you acknowledge the right of the beggar, the neighbor, and the needy." He said: "O Messenger of Allah, make it less for me." He said: "Then give the relative his right, and the needy, and the wayfarer, and do not squander wastefully." He said: "That is sufficient for me, O Messenger of Allah. If I pay the Zakat to your messenger, have I been absolved of it before Allah and His Messenger?" The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "Yes, if you pay it to my messenger, you have been absolved of it; you shall have its reward, and the sin shall be upon the one who alters it."
