Musnad Ahmad 32:459

Hashim narrated to us, Sulayman narrated to us, from Thabit, from Anas ibn Malik, who said: When this verse was revealed: "O you who have believed, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet" [Al-Hujurat: 2] up to His saying: "while you perceive not" [Al-Hujurat: 2], and Thabit ibn Qays ibn Shammas was a man with a loud voice, he said: "I am the one who used to raise my voice above the voice of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace; my deeds have become void, and I am among the people of the Fire." He sat in his house, grieving. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, missed him, so some of the people went to him and said to him: "The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, missed you. What is the matter with you?" He said: "I am the one who raises my voice above the voice of the Prophet and speaks loudly; my deeds have become void, and I am among the people of the Fire." They came to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and informed him of what he had said. He said: "No, rather he is among the people of Paradise." Anas said: "We used to see him walking among us, and we knew that he was among the people of Paradise. When the day of Al-Yamamah came, there was some retreat among us, so Thabit ibn Qays ibn Shammas came, having applied embalming perfume and wearing his shroud, and said: 'How evil is what you have accustomed your peers to!' Then he fought them until he was killed."
