Hadith 32:469
'Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, Ma'mar narrated to us, he said: I heard Thabit narrating from Anas, who said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) conquered Khaybar, al-Hajjaj ibn 'Ilat said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have wealth in Makkah, and I have family there, and I wish to go to them. Am I permitted if I speak ill of you or say something [against you]?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) permitted him to say whatever he wished. So he came to his wife when he arrived and said: "Gather for me what you have, for I want to buy from the spoils of Muhammad and his companions, for they have been defeated and their wealth has been seized." He said: This spread in Makkah, and the Muslims were crushed, while the polytheists showed joy and happiness. He said: The news reached al-'Abbas, and he was struck with grief, and he could not stand up. Ma'mar said: 'Uthman al-Jazari informed me, from Miqsam, who said: He took a son of his named Qutham, laid him on his back, and placed him on his chest, while saying: "My beloved Qutham, similar to the one with the prominent nose, The Prophet of the one who bestows blessings, despite those who refuse." Thabit narrated from Anas: Then he sent a servant to al-Hajjaj ibn 'Ilat, saying: "Woe to you, what have you brought, and what are you saying? For what Allah has promised is better than what you have brought." Al-Hajjaj ibn 'Ilat said to his servant: "Give my greetings to Abu al-Fadl, and tell him: 'Let him clear one of his houses for me so that I may come to him, for the news is what will please him.'" His servant came, and when he reached the door of the house, he said: "Rejoice, O Abu al-Fadl!" He said: Al-'Abbas jumped up in joy until he kissed [the servant] between his eyes. He informed him of what al-Hajjaj had said, so he freed him. Then al-Hajjaj came to him and informed him: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has conquered Khaybar, their wealth has been taken as spoils, the shares of Allah (the Almighty and Majestic) have been distributed among their wealth, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) chose Safiyyah bint Huyayy for himself. He gave her the choice: either he would free her and she would be his wife, or she could join her people. She chose that he free her and she be his wife. But I came for wealth I had here; I wanted to collect it and take it away, so I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) for permission, and he permitted me to say whatever I wished. So keep it hidden from me for three days, then mention whatever you wish." He said: His wife gathered what she had of jewelry and goods, and she collected it and handed it to him. Then he departed with it. When three days had passed, al-'Abbas came to the wife of al-Hajjaj and said: "What did your husband do?" She informed him that he had left on such-and-such a day, and she said: "May Allah not cause you grief, O Abu al-Fadl, for what reached you weighed heavily upon us." He said: "Indeed, may Allah not cause me grief. By the praise of Allah, it was nothing but what we loved: Allah granted the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) victory over Khaybar, the shares of Allah were distributed therein, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) chose Safiyyah bint Huyayy for himself. If you have any need for your husband, then join him." She said: "By Allah, I think you are truthful." He said: "I am truthful; the matter is as I have informed you." He went until he reached the gatherings of the Quraysh, and they were saying when he passed by them: "May nothing but good reach you, O Abu al-Fadl." He said to them: "Nothing but good has reached me, by the praise of Allah. Al-Hajjaj ibn 'Ilat has informed me that Allah has granted His Messenger victory over Khaybar, the shares of Allah have been distributed therein, and he has chosen Safiyyah for himself, and he had asked me to keep it hidden for three days. He only came to take his wealth and whatever he had here, then leave." He said: Allah turned the gloom that was upon the Muslims onto the polytheists. The Muslims came out—even those who had entered their houses in gloom—until they reached al-'Abbas, and he informed them of the news. The Muslims rejoiced, and the gloom, rage, or sadness that was upon them was turned onto the polytheists.
