Hadith 478:0

Narrated to us by Abd al-Razzaq, who said: Narrated to us Ma’mar, from al-Zuhri, from Urwah, from Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, sent a detachment toward the Najd. They captured a man from the Banu Hanifa named Thumamah ibn Uthal, the leader of the people of Yamamah. They brought him and tied him to one of the pillars of the mosque. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, went out to him and said: "What do you have, O Thumamah?" He replied: "I have good, O Muhammad. If you kill me, you kill one who has blood (to be avenged), and if you show favor, you show favor to one who is grateful. If you want wealth, ask, and you shall be given whatever you wish." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, left him until the next day. Then he said: "What do you have, O Thumamah?" He replied: "I have what I told you: if you show favor, you show favor to one who is grateful." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, left him until the following day. Then he said: "What do you have, O Thumamah?" He replied: "I have what I told you." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "Release Thumamah." So they released him. He went to a grove of palm trees near the mosque, performed ghusl (ritual bath), then entered the mosque and said: "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." Then he said: "O Muhammad, by Allah, there was no face on the earth more hateful to me than your face, but now your face has become the most beloved of faces to me. By Allah, there was no religion more hateful to me than your religion, but now your religion has become the most beloved of religions to me. By Allah, there was no land more hateful to me than your land, but now your land has become the most beloved of lands to me. Your cavalry captured me while I was intending to perform Umrah, so what do you advise?" The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, gave him glad tidings and commanded him to perform Umrah. When he arrived in Mecca, someone said to him: "Have you apostatized?" He replied: "No, but I have submitted with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. By Allah, not a single grain of wheat shall come to you from Yamamah until the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, gives permission."
