Hadith of ‘Abd al-Muttalib bin Rabi‘ah bin al-Harith bin ‘Abd al-Muttalib

Hadith 495:2

Husayn ibn Muhammad narrated to us, Yazid—meaning Ibn ‘Ata’—narrated to us, from Yazid—meaning Ibn Abi Ziyad—from ‘Abdullah ibn al-Harith ibn Nawfal, ‘Abd al-Muttalib ibn Rabi‘ah ibn al-Harith ibn ‘Abd al-Muttalib narrated to me, he said: Al-‘Abbas entered upon the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, while angry. He said to him: "What makes you angry?" He said: "O Messenger of Allah, what is the matter with us and the Quraysh? When they meet one another, they meet with smiling faces, and when they meet us, they meet us with other than that." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, became angry until his face turned red, and until a vein between his eyes swelled; and whenever he was angry, it would swell. When it subsided from him, he said: "By the One in Whose hand is my soul—or he said: By the One in Whose hand is the soul of Muhammad—faith does not enter the heart of a man until he loves you for the sake of Allah and His Messenger." Then he said: "O people, whoever harms al-‘Abbas has harmed me, for the uncle of a man is the counterpart of his father."
