Hadith of Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Bakr (RA)
Hadith 12:11
'Arim narrated to us, Mu'tamir ibn Sulayman narrated to us, from his father, Abu 'Uthman narrated to us, that 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr narrated to him, that the People of the Suffah were poor people, and that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said one time: "Whoever has food for two, let him take a third. Whoever has food for four, let him take a fifth or a sixth," or as he said. And Abu Bakr came with three, and the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went with ten, and Abu Bakr with three. He said: So it was me, my father, and my mother—and I do not know if he said: and my wife—and a servant between our house and the house of Abu Bakr. And Abu Bakr had dinner with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), then he stayed until I prayed the 'Isha prayer, then he returned and stayed until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) became drowsy, then he came after as much of the night had passed as Allah willed. His wife said to him: "What kept you from your guests?" or she said: "Your guest?" He said: "Did you not feed them?" She said: "They refused until you came; they offered it to them, but they overcame them." He said: So I went and hid. He said: "O Ghunthar!"—or "O 'Antar!"—and he cursed and insulted, and said: "Eat, may it not be pleasant." And he said: "By Allah, I will never eat it." He said: And the guest swore that he would not eat it until Abu Bakr ate it. He said: So Abu Bakr said: "This is from Satan." He said: So he called for the food, and he ate. He said: By Allah, we would not take a morsel except that it grew from beneath it more than it was. He said: Until they were satisfied, and it became more than it was before that. Abu Bakr looked at it, and it was as it was or more. He said to his wife: "O sister of Banu Firas, what is this?" She said: "No, by the coolness of my eyes, it is now more than it was before that by three times." So Abu Bakr ate from it, and said: "That was only from Satan"—meaning his oath—then he ate a morsel, then he carried it to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and it became with him. He said: There was a treaty between us and some people, and the term expired. We identified twelve men, with each man a group of people—Allah knows how many were with each man—except that he sent them, and they all ate from it, or as he said.
