Musnad Ahmad 834:20

'Affan narrated to us, Wuhayb narrated to us, from Abu Mas'ud al-Jurayri Sa'id ibn Iyas, from Qays ibn 'Abayah, the son of 'Abdullah ibn Mughaffal narrated to me, he said: My father heard me while I was reciting, "In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds." When he finished, he said: "O my son, beware of innovation in Islam, for I prayed behind the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and behind Abu Bakr, and behind 'Umar, and 'Uthman, and they would not begin the recitation with 'In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.' And I have never seen a man to whom innovation was more hateful than him."
