Hadith of Abdullah ibn Abbas (RA), from Ubayy ibn Ka'b (RA)

Hadith 920:11

Abdullah narrated to us, Abdullah bin Ibrahim al-Marwazi narrated to us, Hisham bin Yusuf narrated to me, in the exegesis of Ibn Jurayj which he dictated to them: Ya'la bin Muslim and 'Amr bin Dinar informed me, from Sa'id bin Jubayr—one of them adding more than the other—and others, he said: I heard him narrating it from Sa'id bin Jubayr, who said: We were with Abdullah bin Abbas in his house when he said: "Ask me." I said: "Abu Abbas, may Allah make me your ransom, there is a storyteller in Kufa called Nawf, who claims that he is not the Moses of the Children of Israel." As for 'Amr bin Dinar, he said: "The enemy of Allah has lied." As for Ya'la bin Muslim, he said: Ibn Abbas said: Ubayy bin Ka'b narrated to me, saying: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Moses, the Messenger of Allah, was reminding the people one day until, when the eyes overflowed and the hearts softened, he turned away. A man caught up with him and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, is there anyone on earth more learned than you?' He said: 'No.' He was rebuked for not attributing knowledge to Allah. So Allah revealed to him: 'I have a servant who is more learned than you.' He said: 'O my Lord, and where?' He said: 'At the junction of the two seas.' He said: 'O my Lord, grant me a sign by which I may know that.'" 'Amr said to me: He said: "Where the fish leaves you." And Ya'la said: "Take a dead fish, where the spirit is blown into it." So he took a fish and put it in a basket. He said to his servant: "I do not charge you with anything except that you inform me where the fish leaves you." He said: "You have not charged me with much." That is His saying, Blessed and Exalted is He: {When Moses said to his servant} [Al-Kahf: 60]—Joshua bin Nun—(this is not from Sa'id bin Jubayr). He said: While he was in the shade of a rock in a moist place, the fish thrashed while Moses was sleeping. His servant said: "I will not wake him." When he woke up, he forgot to tell him. The fish thrashed until it entered the sea, and Allah held back the flow of the sea for it, as if its trace was in a stone. 'Amr said to me: "And as if its trace was in a stone," and he circled his thumbs and the ones next to them. {We have certainly met from this journey of ours, fatigue} [Al-Kahf: 62]. He said: "Allah has removed the fatigue from you" (this is not from Sa'id bin Jubayr). He informed him, so they returned and found Khidr. Uthman bin Abi Sulayman said to me: "On a green mat on the surface of the sea." Sa'id bin Jubayr said: "His garment was draped, having placed one end under his feet and one end under his head." Moses greeted him, and he uncovered his face and said: "Is there any greeting in your land? Who are you?" He said: "I am Moses." He said: "Moses of the Children of Israel?" He said: "Yes." He said: "What is your business?" He said: "I have come so that you may teach me of that which you have been taught, of guidance." He said: "Is it not enough for you that the news of the Torah is in your hand, and that the revelation comes to you? O Moses, I have knowledge that you should not know, and you have knowledge that I should not know." Then a bird came and took with its beak [from the sea]. He said: "By Allah, my knowledge and your knowledge in the knowledge of Allah is only like what this bird took with its beak from the sea." When they boarded the ship, they found small ferries carrying the people of this shore to this shore. They recognized him and said: "The righteous servant of Allah." We said to Sa'id: "Khidr?" He said: "Yes." They did not charge him a fee. He breached it and drove a peg into it. Moses said: {Have you breached it to drown its people? You have certainly done a grave thing} [Al-Kahf: 71]. Mujahid said: "An evil thing." He said: {Did I not say that you would not be able to bear with me patiently?} [Al-Kahf: 72]. The first was forgetfulness, the second was a condition, and the third was intentional. He said: {Do not punish me for what I forgot and do not cover me in my matter with difficulty} [Al-Kahf: 73]. Then they met a boy and he killed him. Ya'la bin Muslim said: Sa'id bin Jubayr said: They found boys playing, and he took a disbelieving boy who was clever, laid him down, and then slaughtered him with a knife. He said: {Have you killed a pure soul} [Al-Kahf: 74]—who had not committed a sin. They departed and found a wall that wanted to collapse, and he set it up. Sa'id said: "With his hand like this," and he raised his hand, and it stood straight. Ya'la said: "I think Sa'id said: He wiped it with his hand and it stood straight." He said: {If you had wished, you could have taken for it a payment} [Al-Kahf: 77]. Sa'id said: "A payment to eat." He said: And he used to recite it: {And there was behind them} [Al-Kahf: 79]. And Ibn Abbas used to recite it: "And there was in front of them a king." They claim, from someone other than Sa'id, that he said: "This killed boy—they claim his name is Jaysur—would take every ship by force. He intended, when it passed by him, to leave it because of its defect, and when they passed, they would repair it and benefit from it later." Some of them say: "They plugged it with glass," and some of them say: "With pitch." {And his parents were believers, and he was a disbeliever, so we feared that he would burden them with transgression and disbelief} [Al-Kahf: 80]—that his love would compel them to follow him in his religion. {So we intended that their Lord should substitute for them one better than him in purity and nearer in affection} [Al-Kahf: 81]—they are more affectionate to him than they were to the first one whom Khidr killed. Someone other than Sa'id claimed: "They were replaced with a girl." As for Dawud bin Abi 'Asim, he said from more than one: "It is a girl." And it reached me from Sa'id bin Jubayr: "It is a girl." I found it in my father's book: from Yahya bin Ma'in, from Hisham bin Yusuf, the same.
