Hadith of Abdullah ibn Abbas (RA), from Ubayy ibn Ka'b (RA)

Hadith 920:6

Abdullah narrated to us, my father narrated to me, Abu Uthman Amr ibn Muhammad ibn Bukayr al-Naqid narrated to us, Sufyan ibn Uyaynah narrated to us, from Amr—meaning Ibn Dinar—from Sa’id ibn Jubayr, who said: I said to Ibn Abbas: "Indeed, Nawf al-Shami claims or says: 'The Musa who was the companion of al-Khidr is not the Musa of the Children of Israel.'" He said: "Nawf, the enemy of Allah, has lied." Ubayy ibn Ka’b narrated to me, from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): "Musa stood among the Children of Israel as a preacher, and they said to him: 'Who is the most learned of people?' He said: 'I am.' So Allah revealed to him: 'I have a servant who is more learned than you.' He said: 'My Lord, show him to me.' It was said: 'Take a fish and put it in a basket; wherever you lose it, he is there.'" He said: "So he took a fish and put it in a basket, and he and his servant began walking along the seashore until they reached the rock. Musa fell asleep, and the fish thrashed in the basket and fell into the sea. Allah held back the flow of water for it, so the water became still. Musa woke up and said to his servant: 'Bring us our morning meal; indeed, we have suffered much fatigue from this journey of ours.' He did not feel the fatigue until he had passed the place that Allah had commanded him to reach. He said: 'Do you remember when we betook ourselves to the rock? I indeed forgot the fish; none made me forget to remember it but Satan.' They returned, retracing their footsteps. They began to follow their tracks, and it [the fish] had taken its path into the sea as a tunnel." He said: "He held back the flow of water from it, so it became like an arch over it; it was a tunnel for the fish and a wonder for Musa, until they reached the rock. There, they found a man covered with a garment. Musa greeted him, and he said: 'And how is there peace in your land?' He said: 'I am Musa.' He said: 'Musa of the Children of Israel?' He said: 'Yes. May I follow you on the condition that you teach me something of that knowledge which you have been taught (to guide me to the right path)?' He said: 'O Musa, I possess knowledge from Allah that you do not know, and you possess knowledge from Allah that He has taught you.' So they set off walking along the shore. A ship passed by, and they recognized al-Khidr, so they carried them without a fare. He did not like that, and he looked at the ship, then took an adze, intending to break a plank from it. He said: 'They carried us without a fare, and you want to pierce it to drown its people?' He said: 'Did I not say that you would not be able to have patience with me?' He said: 'I forgot.' A bird came and pecked at the sea. Al-Khidr said: 'My knowledge and your knowledge do not diminish from the knowledge of Allah except as much as this bird has diminished from this sea.'" "Then they set off until they came to the people of a village. They asked its people for food, but they refused to host them. He saw a boy, so he took his head and pulled it off. He said: 'Have you killed an innocent soul who has killed no one? You have indeed committed a horrible thing.' He said: 'Did I not tell you that you would not be able to have patience with me?'" Sufyan said: Amr said: "And this was more severe than the first." He said: "Then they set off, and they found a wall that was about to collapse, so he set it upright." Sufyan showed us with his hands; he raised his hands like this, raising them, then placed his palms and lifted them with the inner parts of his hands, lifting them. He said: "'If you had wished, you could have taken wages for it.' He said: 'This is the parting between me and you.'" Ibn Abbas said: "The first was out of forgetfulness." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "May Allah have mercy on Musa; if only he had been patient, so that more of his affair could have been related to us."
