Musnad Ahmad 988:1

'Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us, Mu'awiyah narrated to us, from Damrah ibn Habib, that Ibn Zaghb al-Iyadi narrated to him, saying: 'Abd Allah ibn Hawalah al-Azdi stayed with me, and he said to me—and he was indeed staying with me in my house—: "The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) sent us around Medina on our feet so that we might obtain spoils, but we returned and did not obtain anything. He recognized the exhaustion on our faces, so he stood among us and said: 'O Allah, do not entrust them to me, for I would be weak; and do not entrust them to themselves, for they would be incapable of it; and do not entrust them to the people, for they would withhold from them.' Then he said: 'Ash-Sham, Rome, and Persia—or Rome and Persia—will surely be opened for you, until one of you will have such and such number of camels, and such and such number of cattle, and such and such number of sheep, until one of them is given one hundred dinars and he is dissatisfied with it.'" Then he placed his hand upon my head, or the crown of my head, and said: "O Ibn Hawalah, when you see the Caliphate has descended upon the Holy Land, then earthquakes, calamities, and great matters have drawn near, and the Hour on that day will be closer to the people than this hand of mine is to your head."
