Musnad Ahmad 1010:1

Abdullah narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr al-Muqaddami narrated to me, al-Dahhak ibn Makhlad narrated to us, Ibn Abi Dhi’b narrated to us, from Usayd ibn Abi Usayd, from Mu’adh ibn Abdullah ibn Khubayb, from his father, who said: A drizzle and darkness befell us, so we waited for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to lead us in prayer. He came out, took my hand, and said, "Speak." I remained silent. He said, "Speak." I said, "What should I say?" He said, "Say: 'He is Allah, [who is] One' (Surah al-Ikhlas) and the two chapters of seeking refuge (al-Mu'awwidhatayn) when you reach evening and when you reach morning, three times. They will suffice you against everything every day, twice."
