Hadith of Abu al-Tufayl Amir ibn Wathilah (RA)
Hadith 1099:1
Yazid narrated to us, al-Walid—meaning ibn Abdullah ibn Jami‘—informed us, from Abu al-Tufayl, who said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) returned from the expedition of Tabuk, he ordered a herald, and he proclaimed: "The Messenger of Allah is taking the mountain pass, so let no one take it." While the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was moving, with Hudhayfah leading his mount and ‘Ammar driving it from behind, a group of masked men on mounts approached. They overwhelmed ‘Ammar while he was driving the mount of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and ‘Ammar began striking the faces of the mounts. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to Hudhayfah: "Drive on, drive on," until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) descended. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had descended, he dismounted, and ‘Ammar returned. He said: "O ‘Ammar, did you recognize the people?" He replied: "I recognized most of the mounts, but the people were masked." He said: "Do you know what they intended?" He replied: "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said: "They intended to startle the mount of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) so that they might throw him off." ‘Ammar asked a man from the companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: "I adjure you by Allah, how many do you know the people of the mountain pass to have been?" He said: "Fourteen." He said: "If you were among them, then they were fifteen." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) excused three of them, who said: "By Allah, we did not hear the herald of the Messenger of Allah, and we did not know what the people intended." ‘Ammar said: "I bear witness that the remaining twelve are at war with Allah and His Messenger in the life of this world and on the day when the witnesses stand forth." Al-Walid said: Abu al-Tufayl mentioned regarding that expedition that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to the people—and it was mentioned to him that there was a scarcity of water—so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) ordered a herald, and he proclaimed: "Let no one reach the water before the Messenger of Allah." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) reached it and found a group who had reached it before him, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) cursed them that day.
