Musnad Ahmad 213:1

Ali ibn Ishaq narrated to us, Abdullah—meaning Ibn al-Mubarak—narrated to us, he said: Sa’id ibn Yazid, who is Abu Shuja’, informed us, he said: I heard al-Harith ibn Yazid al-Hadrami narrating from Ali ibn Rabah, from Nashirah ibn Sumayy al-Yazani, he said: I heard Umar ibn al-Khattab saying on the day of al-Jabiyah, while he was addressing the people: "Indeed, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, made me a treasurer for this wealth and a distributor of it." Then he said: "Rather, Allah distributes it, and I am beginning with the family of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, then the most noble of them." So he allotted ten thousand for the wives of the Prophet, except for Juwayriyah, Safiyyah, and Maymunah. Aisha said: "The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, used to be equitable among us." So Umar made them equal. Then he said: "I am beginning with my companions, the first Emigrants (Muhajirun), for we were driven out of our homes unjustly and aggressively." Then he prioritized them, so he allotted five thousand for those among them who witnessed Badr, and four thousand for those among the Ansar who witnessed Badr, and three thousand for those who witnessed Uhud. He said: "Whoever was swifter in migration, the giving was swifter for him, and whoever was slower in migration, the giving was slower for him. Let no man blame anyone but the place where his mount knelt." "And I apologize to you regarding Khalid ibn al-Walid. I ordered him to withhold this wealth for the weak among the Emigrants, but he gave it to those of might, those of nobility, and those of eloquence, so I removed him and appointed Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah." Abu Amr ibn Hafs ibn al-Mughirah said: "By Allah, you have not acted justly, O Umar ibn al-Khattab. You have removed a worker whom the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, appointed, and you have sheathed a sword that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, drew, and you have lowered a banner that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, raised. You have severed kinship and envied your cousin." Umar ibn al-Khattab said: "You are of close kinship, young in age, and angry on behalf of your cousin."
