Hadith of Abu ‘Amrah al-Ansari (RA)
Hadith 73:1
Ali ibn Ishaq narrated to us, Abdullah—meaning Ibn al-Mubarak—informed us, he said: al-Awza’i informed us, he said: al-Muttalib ibn Hantab al-Makhzumi narrated to me, he said: Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Amrah al-Ansari narrated to me, my father narrated to me, he said: We were with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, on a military expedition, and the people were struck by severe hunger. The people asked the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, for permission to slaughter some of their riding animals, and they said: "Allah will provide for us through it." When Umar ibn al-Khattab saw that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, was inclined to permit them to slaughter some of their riding animals, he said: "O Messenger of Allah, what will become of us if we meet the enemy tomorrow, hungry and on foot? Rather, if you see fit, O Messenger of Allah, call for the remnants of their provisions and gather them, then supplicate to Allah for blessing in them, for Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, will provide for us through your supplication"—or he said: "He will bless us through your supplication." So the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, called for the remnants of their provisions. The people began coming with a handful of food, and more than that, and the most among them was he who brought a sa’ of dates. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, gathered it, then he stood and supplicated as much as Allah willed him to supplicate. Then he called the army with their vessels and ordered them to scoop [the food]. There did not remain a vessel in the army but that they filled it, and the like of it remained. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, laughed until his molars appeared, and he said: "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that I am the Messenger of Allah. No believing servant meets Allah with them [these two testimonies] except that the Fire will be veiled from him on the Day of Resurrection."
