Abu 'Amir narrated to us, Qurrah ibn Khalid narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Sirin, who said: 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakrah narrated to me, from his father, and a man whom I consider better than 'Abd al-Rahman: Humayd ibn 'Abd al-Rahman, from Abu Bakrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) delivered a sermon to us on the Day of Sacrifice (Yawm al-Nahr) and said: "What day is this?" or he said: "Do you know what day this is?" We said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." He remained silent until we thought he would name it by a name other than its own. Then he said: "Is it not the Day of Sacrifice?" We said: "Yes." He said: "What month is this?" or he said: "Do you know what month this is?" We said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." He remained silent until we thought he would name it by a name other than its own. He said: "Is it not Dhu al-Hijjah?" We said: "Yes." He said: "What land is this?" We said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." He remained silent until we thought he would name it by a name other than its own. He said: "Is it not the Sacred City (al-Baldah)?" We said: "Yes." He said: "Indeed, your blood and your wealth are sacred to you, like the sanctity of this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this land of yours, until the day you meet your Lord. Have I not conveyed the message?" They said: "Yes." He said: "O Allah, bear witness. Let the one who is present convey it to the one who is absent, for perhaps the one to whom it is conveyed will understand it better than the one who hears it. Beware, do not return after me as disbelievers, striking the necks of one another."
