Hadith 940:33
Abu al-Nadr narrated to us, Abd al-Hamid ibn Bahram narrated to us, Shahr ibn Hawshab narrated to us, Abd al-Rahman ibn Ghanam narrated to us, that he visited Abu al-Darda in Homs and stayed with him for several nights. Then he ordered his donkey to be saddled. Abu al-Darda said, "I see myself as nothing but following you." So he ordered his donkey to be saddled, and they both traveled on their donkeys. They met a man who had attended the Friday prayer the day before with Mu'awiyah in al-Jabiyah. The man recognized them, but they did not recognize him. He told them the news of the people. Then the man said, "And there is another piece of news that I disliked telling you, as I see you would dislike it." Abu al-Darda said, "Perhaps Abu Dharr has been exiled?" He said, "Yes, by Allah." Abu al-Darda and his companion recited "Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un" (We belong to Allah and to Him we shall return) nearly ten times. Then Abu al-Darda said, "Watch them and be patient, just as it was said to the companions of the she-camel. O Allah, if they have called Abu Dharr a liar, I do not call him a liar. O Allah, if they have accused him, I do not accuse him. O Allah, if they have deemed him treacherous, I do not deem him treacherous. For the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, used to trust him when he would not trust anyone else, and he would confide in him when he would not confide in anyone else." "As for the One in Whose hand is the soul of Abu al-Darda, even if Abu Dharr were to cut off my right hand, I would not hate him after what I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, say: 'The sky has not shaded, nor has the earth carried, a person with a more truthful tongue than Abu Dharr.'"
