Hadith of Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (RA)
Hadith 937:206
Yahya narrated to us, Qudamah ibn Abdullah narrated to us, Jasrah bint Dujajah narrated to me, that she set out to perform Umrah and reached al-Rabadhah, where she heard Abu Dharr saying: The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, stood one night for the Isha prayer and led the people in prayer. Then some of his companions remained behind to pray. When he saw them standing and remaining behind, he turned toward his dwelling. When he saw that the people had cleared the place, he returned to his spot and prayed. I came and stood behind him, so he gestured to me with his right hand, and I stood to his right. Then Ibn Mas’ud came and stood behind me and behind him, so he gestured to him with his left hand, and he stood to his left. The three of us stood, each man praying by himself and reciting from the Quran whatever Allah willed for him to recite. He stood with one verse of the Quran, repeating it until he prayed the dawn prayer. After we reached the morning, I gestured to Abdullah ibn Mas’ud to ask him what he intended by what he did last night. Ibn Mas’ud signaled with his hand: "I will not ask him about anything until he speaks to me." I said: "May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, you stood with one verse of the Quran while you possess the Quran? If one of us had done this, we would have been upset with him." He said: "I interceded for my Ummah." He said: "So what were you answered, or what was replied to you?" He said: "I was answered with that which, if many of them were to know of it, they would abandon the prayer." I said: "Shall I not give the people the good news?" He said: "Yes." So I set out, walking quickly, about the distance of a stone's throw. Then Umar said: "O Messenger of Allah, if you send this to the people, they will refrain from worship." So he called out to him: "Return," and he returned. And that verse is: {If You punish them, indeed they are Your servants; but if You forgive them, indeed it is You who is the Exalted in Might, the Wise} [Al-Ma'idah: 118].
