Musnad Ahmad 937:240

Yazid narrated to us, he said: Al-Aswad ibn Shayban informed us, from Yazid Abu al-Ala’, from Mutarrif ibn Abdullah ibn al-Shikhkhir, who said: A hadith reached me from Abu Dharr, and I loved to meet him, so I met him. I said to him: "O Abu Dharr, a hadith reached me from you, and I loved to meet you to ask you about it." He said: "You have met me, so ask." I said: "It reached me that you say: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: 'Three whom Allah loves, and three whom Allah hates.'" He said: "Yes, and I do not think I would lie about my intimate friend Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)," saying it three times. I said: "Who are the three whom Allah the Almighty loves?" He said: "A man who fought in the way of Allah, and met the enemy, striving and seeking reward, and fought until he was killed; and you find in the Book of Allah the Almighty: {Indeed, Allah loves those who fight in His cause in a row} [As-Saff: 4]. And a man who has a neighbor who harms him, so he bears his harm and seeks reward for it until Allah suffices him against him through death or life. And a man who is with a people, and they travel until sleep and drowsiness become difficult for them, so they dismount at the end of the night, and he stands for his ablution and his prayer." I said: "Who are the three whom Allah hates?" He said: "The boastful, the arrogant—and you find in the Book of Allah the Almighty: {Indeed, Allah does not like everyone who is self-deluded and boastful} [Luqman: 18]—and the miser who reminds others of his gifts, and the merchant or seller who swears many oaths." I said: "O Abu Dharr, what is wealth?" He said: "A *faraq* and a *thawd* for us." He meant by *faraq*: a small number of sheep. I said: "I am not asking you about this; I am only asking you about silent wealth (gold and silver)." He said: "What I wake up with, I do not reach the evening with, and what I reach the evening with, I do not wake up with." I said: "O Abu Dharr, what is between you and your brothers, the Quraysh?" He said: "By Allah, I will not ask them for worldly gain, nor will I seek their religious rulings regarding the religion of Allah until I meet Allah and His Messenger," saying it three times.
