Musnad Ahmad 393:1

Hafs ibn Ghiyath narrated to us, he said: Dawud ibn Abi Hind narrated to us, from al-Sha’bi, from Abu Jubayrah ibn al-Dahhak al-Ansari, from paternal uncles of his, who said: The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, arrived, and there was not one of us except that he had a nickname or two. He said: So when he would call someone by his nickname, we would say: "O Messenger of Allah, this person dislikes this." He said: Then it was revealed: "And do not call one another by [offensive] nicknames."
