Musnad Ahmad 1015:5

Muhammad ibn Ja‘far narrated to us, ‘Awf narrated to us, from Abu al-Minhal, from Shahr ibn Hawshab, who said: There was among us, the group of the Ash‘aris, a man who had accompanied the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and had witnessed with him the good and beautiful battles. ‘Awf said: I think it was said that his name was Malik or Abu Malik. He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) say: "I have known peoples who are neither prophets nor martyrs, yet the prophets and the martyrs will envy them for their station with Allah."
