Musnad Ahmad 1013:12

Yazid narrated to us, Mas'udi informed us, from Abu Hazim, from Sahl ibn Sa'd, who said: There was a dispute between some people of the Ansar, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went to them to reconcile between them. The time for prayer arrived, so Bilal came to Abu Bakr and said: "O Abu Bakr, the prayer has arrived and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is not here. Shall I call the Adhan and the Iqamah, and you step forward and lead the prayer?" He said: "Do as you wish." So Abu Bakr stepped forward and began the prayer. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) arrived. The people clapped their hands (to alert) Abu Bakr. Abu Bakr went to step back, but the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gestured to him, meaning: "Stay in your place." Abu Bakr stepped back, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stepped forward and prayed. When he finished the prayer, he said: "O Abu Bakr, what prevented you from remaining?" He said: "It is not for the son of Abu Quhafa to step forward in front of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)." He said: "And you, why did you clap your hands?" They said: "To inform Abu Bakr." He said: "Verily, clapping is for women, and glorifying Allah (saying SubhanAllah) is for men."
