Musnad Ahmad 1013:18

Abu al-Nadr narrated to us, Abd al-Rahman—meaning Ibn Abd Allah ibn Dinar—narrated to us, from Abu Hazim, from Sahl ibn Sa’d, who said: There was a man with the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, in some of his military expeditions, and he fought a good fight. The Muslims were amazed by his fighting, but the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "As for him, he is of the people of the Fire." We said: "In the path of Allah, with the Messenger of Allah? Allah and His Messenger know best." He said: The man was wounded, and when his wounds became severe, he placed the tip of his sword between his breasts, then leaned upon it. It was brought to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and it was said to him: "The man whom you said what you said about, I have seen him struggling while the sword was between his sides." The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "Indeed, a man may perform the deeds of the people of Paradise as it appears to the people, while he is of the people of the Fire; and indeed, he may perform the deeds of the people of the Fire as it appears to the people, while he is of the people of Paradise."
