Musnad Ahmad 1013:51

Bahz narrated to us, Hammad—meaning Ibn Salamah—narrated to us, Abu Hazim informed us, from Sahl ibn Sa’d, that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came to the Banu ‘Amr ibn ‘Awf in a dispute that had occurred between them, in order to reconcile between them. The time for the ‘Asr prayer arrived, so Bilal said to Abu Bakr, "Shall I call the iqamah and you lead the people in prayer?" Abu Bakr said, "Yes." So Bilal called the iqamah, and Abu Bakr stepped forward to lead the people in prayer. Then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came, passing through the rows, and the people began clapping. Abu Bakr would hardly ever turn around during prayer, but when they did it excessively, Abu Bakr turned around and found the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) passing through the rows. Abu Bakr stepped back, but the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) gestured to him to stay in his place. Abu Bakr stepped back, and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) stepped forward and led them in prayer. When he finished his prayer, he said, "O Abu Bakr, what prevented you from staying when I gestured to you?" He replied, "It is not for the son of Abu Quhafah to lead the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) in prayer." Then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Why is it that when something happens to you, you clap? Say 'SubhanAllah,' for clapping is for women."
