Hadith of Abu Malik Sahl bin Sa'd al-Sa'idi (RA)

Hadith 1013:66

Hujayn ibn al-Muthanna narrated to us, Abd al-Aziz—meaning Ibn Abi Salamah—narrated to us, from Abu Hazim al-Qass, from Sahl ibn Sa’d al-Sa’idi, the companion of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), who said: A person came to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and said: "The tribe of Amr ibn Awf have fought each other and have been throwing stones at one another." So the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) went out to them to reconcile between them. The time for prayer arrived, so Bilal came to Abu Bakr al-Siddiq and said: "Will you lead the prayer so that I may call the Iqamah?" He said: "Yes." Bilal called the Iqamah for the prayer, and Abu Bakr stepped forward. When he entered the prayer and the people stood in rows behind him, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) arrived from where he had gone. He began passing through the rows until he reached the first row. Then he stood, and the people began clapping to alert Abu Bakr to the presence of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace). Abu Bakr would not turn around during the prayer, but when they persisted, he turned around and found the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) behind him with the people. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) gestured to him to remain in his place. He raised his hands as if supplicating, then he stepped backward until he reached the row. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) stepped forward and led the people in prayer. When he finished his prayer, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "What is the matter with you? When something happens to you during your prayer, you begin clapping. If something happens to one of you during his prayer, let him say 'SubhanAllah' (tasbih), for indeed the tasbih is for men and clapping is for women." Then he said to Abu Bakr: "What made you raise your hands? What prevented you from remaining when I gestured to you?" He said: "I raised my hands because I praised [Allah] for what I saw of you, and it was not appropriate for the son of Abu Quhafah to lead the Messenger of Allah in prayer."
